Briefly describe your applied learning experience

I studied Spanish for health care professionals and alternative medicine in Costa Rica for the summer. It was a wonderful way to get out of my comfort zone, increase my level of fluency in Spanish, and open my eyes to new perspectives about medicine. I learned a lot that I never would have in a classroom. 

How did you get involved in this applied learning experience and what did you hope to gain from it?

I sought out this program with help from the Office of International Programs at UNCW. I hoped to increase my language skills as well as gain experience working in a different type of healthcare setting than we have in the U.S.

What did you gain from this experience? What was challenging? What did you learn?

I learned about new perspectives, new ways of life, and many different hands-on skills that I never would have experienced in the States. I also learned how to adapt culturally and learn about people who were very different from me. 

In what way will this experience make you a more viable candidate when you are seeking a job or applying for graduate study?

I now have many more hands-on skills for hospital jobs as well as a much higher level of language proficiency that will definitely help me find a nursing job after I graduate
